Irene Mbithe has been arrested after killing her six-month baby son Irene Mbithe has been arrested after brutally killing her six-month son in Kangurue, Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday, February 25.
The woman reportedly ripped out his tongue and intestines in an exorcism ritual after she became convinced the boy had been possessed by the demons.
Neighbors reported Irene to police after she was heard screaming, cursing loudly and throwing away the baby’s clothes in the late hours of the night.
Irene’s aunt, Catherine Muthama, was the first to arrive at the scene, she said: “When I arrived I was surprised to see the mother having pulled out the tongue of the baby and I screamed at her asking why she had killed him.” Trying to explain her actions the woman, who is believed to be a member of a Machakos-based cult, said she didn’t want to hurt the baby and just followed her church’s teachings.
The remorseful mother added: “God punish me if I have done anything wrong to my son who I love so much and have prayed for years to conceive and give birth to.”
According to local media reports, the boy had been suffering from constant fever and had malformed genitals that tricked Irene into believing a dark force is behind her son’s condition. Police officers took Mbithe for questioning to the Kayole Police station, while the baby’s body was taken to the morgue for post mortem examination.
