THE END OF THE WICKED

19 Tell him that I, the Lord, say to him, ‘After murdering the man, are you taking over his property as well?’ Tell him that this is what I say: ‘In the very place that the dogs licked up Naboth's blood they will lick up your blood!’”

20 When Ahab saw Elijah, he said, “Have you caught up with me, my enemy?”

“Yes, I have,” Elijah answered. “You have devoted yourself completely to doing what is wrong in the Lord's sight. 21 So the Lord says to you, ‘I will bring disaster on you. I will do away with you and get rid of every male in your family, young and old alike. 22 Your family will become like the family of King Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the family of King Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have stirred up my anger by leading Israel into sin.’

Daily reflections

Everything anybody does in this world has a consequence. When you are good, you will reap a reward of goodness, but when you do bad,the reward you shall get is evil. The wicked will nev live for ever. There is always an appointed day for the wicked one to reap his reward.
In today's Gospel we have the central theme of the Sermon on the Mount: "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Jesus makes this explicit in the Gospel when He said "You, therefore, must be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect." Perfection here means being a different person with a different attitude. Jesus does not demand sanctity of an exclusive one but a perfection that we earn as we love even our enemies. This is a total turn around instruction since the Old Testament restricted love of neighbour only to a fellow Israelites (Lev. 19:17).

Jesus permits no such restriction because His concept of love rises above the psychological and physical to a spiritual attitude of love for all. Our love must extend to everyone, to the unrewarding, even to those who are our personal and national enemies. Our love as Jesus taught must know no boundary like that of our Heavenly Father who forgives Ahab's sin in the first reading. God is good both to the unjust and the just. His love embraces saints and sinners alike. God seeks our highest good and teaches us to seek the highest good of others, even those who hate and abuse us. Our love for others, even those who are ungrateful towards us, must be marked by the same kindness and mercy which Jesus has shown to us.

May Christ grant us the grace to always forgive those who wronged us. Amen!
